Our Mission

Marriam Begum is a mother of two children who got married at the age of 13. Her husband was a drug addict and the family was surviving on less than a dollar a day. This situation ended her marriage, as well as the fact that she was the victim of domestic violence. Marriam got a job as a maidservant but her wages were not enough to make ends meet for her family. In 2010, Help the Needy established a Women’s Training Centre adjacent to the slum where Marriam lives. This encouraged her to take training in tailoring and embroidery, where she successfully completed the course. Before receiving training, her daily income was less than a dollar a day. However after completing the training, her monthly income increased to BDT 6000 and she now lives out of poverty with her two children. Marriam says, “I pray for Help the Needy and their donors for helping me to learn a new skill that enabled me to confidently change my life and live with a sense of dignity and pride.”
